If you need something to deploy multiple OS from an central point in your network have a look at UDA (http://www.ultimatedeployment.org/uda/index.html). It’s an virtual machine you can use in any vmware product (like Workstation / Server/ ESX Server). And offcourse most important of all, it’s FREE! J

Initially put it in an private network (host-only) enviroment, because it has DHCP on by default and you don’t want that messing with your DHCP in an productive enviroment. Once you put an other machine in the same private network as the UDA, you can browse to 10.0.0.104 to begin setting up the UDA.

To put the UDA in an existing Windows DHCP infrastructure (link):

To Disable DHCP On the UDA:

  1. Logon as Admin on the UDA’s web-admin tool
  2. Click the Services link
  3. Select the DHCP link
  4. Click the Configure button
  5. Disable the option for Start DHCP on boot
  6. Click the Apply button
  7. Click the Services link again
  8. Select the DHCP link again
  9. Click the Stop button

To Enable DHCP On the Windows DHCP:

  1. Configure the following Scope Options or Server Options:
  2. Enable the option 066 Boot Server Host Name, and set the empty string value to be the IP address of your UDA
  3. Enable the option 067 Bootfile Name, and set the empty string to be, pxelinux.0

Then configure UDA with an free IP-address in your production environment and put it in your production environment.

Now you’ve configured Windows to use UDA as the deployment source for PXE clients in your production environment, you can continue to configure UDA.

To put you’re OS-images on an windows server (don’t user an domain controller, because there seems to be a problem with the Fedora Kernel and windows servers acting as a domain controller):

  • Create an windows user (for example: image_user).
  • Create an windows share and give user Full Control on share and full control on filesystem (if NTFS).
  • Mount share in UDA
    • Mount Points > Create New mountpoint
    • Fill in settings

  • Copy images you want to use to the share we’ve just created
  • Configure OS (For example Windows XP)
    • OS > Configure
  • Configure Template
    • Templates > Create new template
    • If you want to change the .sif file UDA uses to automate the WINXP install, edit the template configuration.
  • And now you’re ready to boot up your PXE client

Note: First try to activate the activex component mentioned at the bottom of this post, before you replace the dll.

For you out there experiencing the same problem with the WIDCOMM bluetooth software (object doesn't support this property or method in btrezxp.dll/212) in Windows XP SP2.

I've created a patched DLL with the failing code removed:

CODE:
  1. if(allIcons != null)
  2. for(i=0; i<allIcons.length; i++)
  3. allIcons(i).SetIcon(allIcons(i).innerHTML,-1);

.

Doesn't look to dangerous to remove this code from the dll which only seems to want to hide some icons.

Replace the existing btrezxp.dll with this one and restart explorer or just simply reboot and this annoying error should be history.

EDIT: Thank you to J T W pointing out that the problem is caused by an disabled activex in IE7. Read this comment.

Enabling the ActiveX control called IconX Class in IE7 Tools/Programs/Manage add-ons fixes this problem

EDIT: Thanks to MM for this entry:

Fix:
1. Enable common tasks (Tools/Options within explorer).
2. Open my bluetooth places.
3. Click on Active X. Say yes.
4. It installs.
5. Disable common tasks again.
6. Fixed.

Pinkpop 2007

Just had a laptop on my desk which refused to get Flash Player 9 working under IE7. Flash Player 9 under FF worked just fine. Applied the following fix to get it working in IE7 again.

http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=fb1634cb

1. Follow the instructions to download and install the subinacl tool from Microsoft here.
2. Use a text editor to create a file and name it reset.cmd. Save the reset.cmd in C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools folder.
3. Copy and paste the following content into the reset.cmd file. Then save and close the file.

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=system=f
subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=system=f
4. Open the command window to run the reset.cmd script. Select Start, Run, and type in "cmd".
5. In the command windows type in "cd C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools" and select Enter.
6. Type in "reset.cmd" and select Enter. This will run the SubInACL tool.
7. After a few minutes processing subinacl, the permissions will be reset.
8. Install the Flash Player from here: www.adobe.com/go/getflashplayer
9. Test the Flash Player here: www.adobe.com/shockwave/welcome

After running this fix and reinstalling Flash Player 9 again, it finally worked.
