image Annoyed by having to call microsoft to get a hotfix that is not available via the website. Now there's hotfixr. Here you give the KB you want to have the download for and you're e-mail address and within a day the hotfix will be mailed to you!

5-7-2009: Currently Hotfixes can be ordered directly from the Microsoft website, so this hotfixr is no longer needed to do this

Today i passed the microsoft exam 70-649 for upgrading my MCSE 2003 certification to MSTS 3x certifications (Active directory configuration, Applications Infrastructure and Networking infrastructure configuration). Next one up is 70-620 )Configuration Windows Vista Client), followed by 70-647 (Windows Server 2008 Enterprise administration), which makes me an MCITP: Enterprise administrator. After this certification i'll be focussing on Citrix and further Vmware certification.

I also have a new job starting 1 October 2008. I'll be joining Valid ICT from Eindhoven (Maastricht and Utrecht) as a Senior Network administrator. This means an new challenge for me and gives me the opportunity to specialize in SBC and Virtualisation.

You can use DD-WRT to update multiple dynamic dns services (including opendns) using DNS-O-Matic (www.dnsomatic.com).

  1. Create an account with dns-o-matic (if you already have an opendns account, you'll also have a dns-o-matic account with the same credentials.
  2. Add the services you want updated each time your ip changes.
  3. Use the following settings in DD-WRT to let DNS-O-Matic automatically update the services you selected : http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/DDNS_-_How_to_setup_Custom_DDNS_settings_using_embedded_inadyn_-_HOWTO#DNS-O-Matic

    DDNS Service: Custom
    DYNDNS Server: updates.dnsomatic.com
    User Name: your dns-o-matic username
    Password: your dns-o-matic password
    Host Name: all.dnsomatic.com
    URL: /nic/update?

Getting sick of Windows making a mess of your drive letters when using lots of different USB sticks, you can use the USB drive letter manager.

You can configure this tool to start drive letters at a certain letter or even let them mount at a certain mount point. Also you can configure a balloon tip to show which drive letter/mount point the usb device was mapped to.

My sample configuration:

[BalloonTips]
Enabled=1
Timeout=6000
[Settings]
NoMediaNoLetter=1
WriteLogFile=1
LogLevel=3
[DriveLetters]
Letter1=I
Letter2=J
Letter3=K
Letter4=L
Letter5=M
Letter6=N

This example configuration starts USB drive mounting at I: and ends on N:, shows balloons when connecting a device and writes a logfile for troubleshooting purposes. Also this file doesn't assign an usb letter to an card reader when no media is inserted, it only mounts it when the media is inserted.

I really like this tool!

Finally, the feature i missed most at Gmail is added. Gmail now has IMAP support! Go here!

On the softgrid blog an item is posted about scripting within a OSD file, which can be very useful when having to do certain things during different stages of the application streaming proces.

This is an excerpt of some text that was created to give the basics of the scripting concept. I try to go into detail on the Whats and the Hows and I also put in several script examples at the end. These examples are actual scripts that have been used in the field. Along with the example is an explanation of what the script is doing. After reading this article however, try to look at just the script example and decipher for yourself what it is doing. A mini self quiz if you will.

Zamzar lets you convert your files online without having to install any software at all. You upload the file you want to convert and select a file type you want to convert the file to, enter your email and the converted file is sent to your email address. I use it a lot to convert PDF to editable doc files.

OneClick for WordPress is a combination of a firefox-plugin and a wordpress plugin which allows you to easily install new wordpress plugin/themes without having to ftp into your webserver-box. I tried it and it works fine. Haven't been able to check the security implications, so use with caution.

OpenDNS is a stable, fast DNS Service. When I switched from my provider's DNS service to OpenDNS I noticed an significant increase in DNS lookup speed. Take a look at this page : http://www.opendns.com/features/overview/ . This page shows the extra features OpenDNS has which you can configure without installing any software on your home computers. Wanna give this service a try, just point your computer at the following DNS addresses and you are up and running. Manuals how to install this service on your computer you can find here.

Preferred DNS server address for Open DNS is: 208.67.222.222
Alternate DNS server address for Open DNS is: 208.67.220.220

If you wanna configure the settings OpenDNS uses for your DNS service, you'll have to create an account. To give you an impression of what you can configure, i posted a screenshot of the main settings page.
